Boiled egg calories

By Nirmal Amin. Checked on 14 October 2026.

One boiled egg, about 50 g without the shell, has about 65 calories, with 7 g of protein and 5 g of fat. Two boiled eggs are about 135 and three about 200. Boiling adds nothing: the number is the egg itself, so a bigger egg has more. ICMR-NIN counts a boiled egg at 90, which fits an egg of about 65 g.

Boiled egg calories: 65 for 1 boiled egg (about 50 g), 135 for 2 boiled eggs, 200 for 3 boiled eggs.

A boiled egg is the simplest thing to count on this site: there is no oil, no masala and no cooked weight to guess. The only question is the size of the egg, and that is where the sources differ.

Indian eggs sold loose are often 45 to 55 g. The 50 g egg used here is the Indian Nutrient Databank's household measure and the same as USDA's large egg.

Typical values for a home kitchen, for the portion named next to each number. Other sites often show bigger numbers because they count a bigger serving or a restaurant recipe. Your own katori, roti and oil change the number; Slate adjusts for them.

What changes the calories in boiled egg?

  • Egg size. A 50 g egg has about 65 calories; an egg of 60 to 65 g has about a quarter more, which is where ICMR-NIN's 90 comes from.
  • The yolk holds nearly all the fat, so an egg eaten without its yolk has far fewer calories and about half the protein.
  • Boiling time changes nothing: soft-boiled and hard-boiled eggs have the same calories.
  • What goes with it does. A boiled egg in egg curry picks up the masala's oil, about 185 per egg with gravy.
  • Duck eggs and desi eggs are a little larger and richer than farm hen's eggs; the values here are for the ordinary white hen's egg.

How were these numbers worked out?

The boiled egg follows The Art & Science of Cooking (via the Indian Nutrient Databank): one hen's egg, counted as 50 g without the shell, the same as USDA's large egg, at IFCT 2017's value for whole raw egg, since boiling in the shell changes neither the weight nor the nutrients and nothing is added. One egg is 65 calories, two 135, and the egg is 135 calories per 100 g. Two checks sit above it: USDA's hard-boiled large egg at 77.5 calories is 15% higher, because USDA's egg carries a little more fat than IFCT's, and ICMR-NIN's boiled egg at 90 calories is 34% higher, which fits an egg of about 65 g since NIN states no weight. Both are more than 15% away, so the page shows a range for egg size. No outside range is shown: a boiled egg from a stall is the same egg, and an egg bhurji or omelette stall is a different dish with its own page. Every dish on Slate is worked out the same way: how Slate counts calories.

ICMR-NIN counts a boiled egg at 90 calories, and USDA's large egg works out to about 78, against 65 here from IFCT 2017's egg. Egg size explains most of it: a 50 g egg is a medium Indian egg, and a 60 to 65 g egg has a quarter more. A boiled egg is about 65 to 90 calories depending on its size.
