Privacy policy

Who we are

Slate is made by Sonal Systems Private Limited (CIN U62099GJ2026PTC179785), A-3, Mehsana Nagar, Nizampura, Vadodara 390002, Gujarat, India. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Sonal Systems.

We are the Data Fiduciary for your personal data under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (the DPDP Act) and its Rules. This policy explains what Slate collects, why, where it goes and what you can do about it.

What we collect

Slate collects only what it needs to put a number next to your lines and keep your Slate in sync.

• Your body: age or date of birth, sex, height and weight.
• Goals: the calorie and macro goals you set.
• Your kitchen and About you: your katori, roti, oil, chai and coffee settings, and your optional answers on diet, foods you avoid, fasting days, where you eat outside, your day, sleep, and what you'd like to keep an eye on, plus your How you cook note. Diet and fasting answers can reveal beliefs or practices. They are optional, and we use them only to read your lines the way you mean them and, if you use chat, as context for its answers.
• Your Slate: every line you write and the numbers Slate calculated for it, and your water, steps, exercise, weight and sleep.
• Things Slate works out: your BMR, baseline, weight trend and measured maintenance.
• Saved foods and custom dishes you create.
• Chat messages (Slate Plus).
• Photos (Slate Plus): processed to identify the dishes on your plate, and not stored.
• Voice logging (Slate Plus): your speech is turned into text on your iPhone, or by Apple's speech service where on-device recognition isn't available. Slate never receives or stores audio, only the text line you choose to add.
• Delivery orders (Slate Plus): order text you share or paste is read on your iPhone to make lines. Only the lines you add are stored, like any other line.
• Apple Health (Slate Plus, only if you allow it): steps, weight, workouts, and the name of the app that recorded them.
• Account and service data: an anonymous account ID, your subscription status, counts of how often you use AI features, and technical logs such as errors and timestamps.

Reminders are scheduled on your iPhone as local notifications. Slate doesn't use a push service and doesn't send marketing notifications.

What we don't collect

We don't collect your name, phone number, email address (unless you write to us), contacts, location, advertising ID or browsing data.

Label scanning happens on your phone. Barcode scanning sends only the barcode number to Open Food Facts, nothing else about you.

Why we use it

We use your data to:

• calculate and show your numbers;
• sync your Slate;
• read the lines you write;
• run Slate Plus features;
• enforce fair-use limits on AI features;
• keep the service working and secure; and
• answer your support emails.

Nothing else.

Consent and withdrawing it

You give consent when you set up Slate. You can withdraw it at any time by deleting your data from Settings, Your data, Delete my data. Apple Health access can be turned off at any time in your iPhone's Settings.

What we never do

• Show ads.
• Sell your data.
• Share your data for marketing.
• Profile you for third parties.
• Train AI models on your Slate.

Processors and where data goes

We use a small number of service providers to run Slate. Each one handles only what it needs for its job.

Some data is transferred outside India: to the USA, for the services above, and to France for barcode lookups. These transfers are limited to the purposes listed, as permitted under the DPDP Act.

How long we keep it

• Your data is kept while you use Slate.
• When you delete your data from Settings, it is deleted immediately. Backups are cleared within 30 days.
• Accounts that are inactive for 24 months are deleted.
• Chat messages are kept until you clear them.
• Photos are not kept.
• Server logs are kept for up to 1 year.
• Subscription records stay with your Apple ID, under Apple's policies.

Your rights

Under the DPDP Act you have the right to:

• Access and export your data: Settings, Your data, Export your data gives you JSON and CSV files.
• Correct your data: edit any line or setting in the app.
• Erase your data: Settings, Your data, Delete my data. It's immediate.
• Withdraw consent: delete your data as above.
• Nominate someone to exercise your rights if you die or become unable to: email us.
• Grievance redressal: write to our Grievance Officer (below).
• Complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

For anything you can't do in Settings, email privacy@writeonslate.com. We reply within 30 days.

Children

Slate is for people 18 and older. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we delete it.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit. Row-level security in the database means each account can read only its own rows. Access within Sonal Systems is limited to what each person needs. If there is a personal data breach, we will notify you and the Data Protection Board of India as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date. Material changes will also be shown in the app.
