Rajma chawal calories

By Nirmal Amin. Checked on 15 October 2026.

A plate of rajma chawal, a 200 ml katori of home rajma with a katori of plain rice, has about 370 calories and 12 g of protein. With 2 katoris of rice it is about 530; a teaspoon of ghee takes it to about 415. At a dhaba, with a ghee tadka and cream, about 415 to 490.

Rajma chawal calories: 370 for 1 plate (a 200 ml katori of rajma, a 200 ml katori of rice), 415 for 1 plate with 1 tsp ghee (5 g), 280 for 1 small plate (150 ml katoris of each), 530 for 1 large plate (a katori of rajma, 2 katoris of rice).

Rajma chawal is the Sunday lunch of Punjab, Delhi and Jammu: red kidney beans simmered in an onion and tomato masala, ladled over plain rice, with sliced onion and a wedge of lemon on the side. In Delhi it's also a street lunch, served by the plate from a steel counter.

This page adds up the site's own rajma and plain rice pages into one plate, in the proportions people actually eat, so the plate's number is exactly the sum of its parts. The rice is the easy part; how much rajma, and how much oil went into it, is what moves the total.

Typical values for a home kitchen, for the portion named next to each number. Other sites often show bigger numbers because they count a bigger serving or a restaurant recipe. Your own katori, roti and oil change the number; Slate adjusts for them.

How many calories are in rajma chawal?

How does home rajma chawal compare with outside?

Dhaba rajma usually gets a second tadka of ghee, restaurant rajma is sometimes finished with cream, and the rice may come with a spoon of ghee on top. The plate is often bigger than a home one too.

No lab has measured a plate of rajma chawal, so the range below is the two dish pages' outside ranges added together, for the same katori of each.

One plate. The outside range adds the rajma page's ghee tadka and cream and the rice page's spoon of ghee.

What changes the calories in rajma chawal?

  • How much rice. A second katori of rice takes the plate from about 370 to 530 calories; a full plate cooked from 100 g of raw rice with the same rajma is about 570.
  • Ghee on top. A teaspoon takes the plate to about 415.
  • The rajma's oil. The masala here takes about a teaspoon and a half of oil per katori; each extra teaspoon adds about 40 to 45 calories (see rajma).
  • The katori. A small plate of 150 ml katoris is about 280; a 250 ml katori of rajma alone is about 265.
  • A thick, reduced rajma holds more beans in each katori than a thin one. Sliced onion, lemon and a little salad add almost nothing.

How were these numbers worked out?

The plate is a 200 ml katori of rajma and a 200 ml katori of plain rice, each made exactly as on its own page, added from the pages' unrounded values and rounded once, so the plate equals its parts. The rajma is the kidney bean curry in The Art & Science of Cooking, 30 g of dry rajma with tomato, onion and 1.5 teaspoons of oil per bowl; the rice is 100 g of raw milled rice cooked until the water is absorbed, with a katori at 0.67 g per ml; IFCT 2017 supplies every value. The plate is 370 calories. No analysed plate of rajma chawal exists, so there is no cross-check here; the parts are checked on the rajma and plain rice pages. The dhaba range is the two pages' outside ranges added together: rajma with a ghee tadka and up to 15 g of cream, and rice with up to a teaspoon of ghee. Every dish on Slate is worked out the same way: how Slate counts calories.

One plate: a 200 ml katori of rajma and a 200 ml katori of plain rice, each made as on its own page.
