Jeera rice calories

By Nirmal Amin. Checked on 14 October 2026.

A 200 ml katori of jeera rice has about 185 calories, against about 160 for plain rice. A plate from 80 g of raw rice is about 375. Oil or ghee is the only real difference from plain rice, about 40 to 45 calories a teaspoon. A restaurant plate, bigger, with more ghee, runs about 375 to 680.

Jeera rice calories: 185 for 1 katori (200 ml), 140 for 100 g, 140 for 1 katori (150 ml), 230 for 1 katori (250 ml).

Jeera rice is rice cooked with cumin seeds fried in oil or ghee, sometimes with a little onion. It's the standard rice on north Indian restaurant menus, served with dal fry, dal makhani and paneer dishes.

It's plain rice with a tempering, so the oil or ghee is the only real difference from steamed rice. In this recipe it's about a fifth of the calories.

Typical values for a home kitchen, for the portion named next to each number. Other sites often show bigger numbers because they count a bigger serving or a restaurant recipe. Your own katori, roti and oil change the number; Slate adjusts for them.

How does home jeera rice compare with outside?

Restaurant jeera rice is usually made with ghee rather than oil, often with more of it, and a restaurant plate can be bigger than a home one.

No lab has measured it, so the range below allows a plate up to 1.5 times this one, with up to twice the fat.

What changes the calories in jeera rice?

  • Oil or ghee is the only real difference from plain rice. Each teaspoon adds about 40 to 45 calories to the pot.
  • A heaped katori holds more than a level one.
  • Basmati and everyday rice are within a few percent of each other per gram.
  • Ghee rice and peas pulao add more fat or vegetables: see pulao.

How were these numbers worked out?

The recipe is the cumin pulao in Basic Food Preparation (via the Indian Nutrient Databank): 80 g of rice with half a teaspoon of cumin, 20 g of onion and 2 teaspoons of oil, cooked in 160 ml of water, the oil counted as eaten, at IFCT 2017 values with the rice as parboiled, as the databank maps it. The ingredients added together weigh about 270 g, which matches the rice at 2.98 times its raw weight plus the onion, cumin and oil, so the plate is 375 calories and the pot 140 per 100 g; a katori uses the plain rice page's 0.67 g per ml, so a 200 ml katori is 185. No analysed jeera rice exists in IFCT 2017, NIN or USDA FNDDS, so there is no cross-check. No restaurant jeera rice has been analysed either; the range assumes a plate up to 1.5 times as big with up to twice the oil or ghee. Every dish on Slate is worked out the same way: how Slate counts calories.
