Curd rice calories
A 200 ml katori of curd rice has about 220 calories, and a 150 ml katori about 165. A plate from 80 g of raw rice with curd, milk and a tadka is about 410. The ratio of rice to curd matters most: more curd lowers the number per katori. Restaurant curd rice runs about 220 to 330.

Curd rice is soft-cooked rice mashed with curd and a little milk, tempered with mustard seeds, dry red chilli, curry leaves, ginger and green chilli. It ends most meals in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra, and it's a common tiffin and travel food because the milk keeps it from turning sour too fast.
Rice is about two thirds of its calories. Curd and milk add about a fifth, and the tadka oil about a tenth.
Typical values for a home kitchen, for the portion named next to each number. Other sites often show bigger numbers because they count a bigger serving or a restaurant recipe. Your own katori, roti and oil change the number; Slate adjusts for them.

How does home curd rice compare with outside?
Curd rice in a meals hotel or restaurant is much the same dish. It's sometimes richer, with cream or more milk, tempered in ghee and topped with pomegranate or grapes.
No lab has measured it, so the range below allows a katori up to 1.3 times as dense and up to a teaspoon of ghee.

| Home | 220 | 5 g |
| Restaurant or meals hotel | 220 to 330 | 5 to 12 g |
What changes the calories in curd rice?
- The ratio of rice to curd matters most. More curd and less rice lowers the calories per katori.
- Full-fat curd and milk add more than toned. Cream, as some restaurants add, adds about 30 calories a tablespoon.
- Without the tadka a plate is about 40 calories lighter.
- Pomegranate, grated carrot and cucumber add very little.
How were these numbers worked out?
The recipe is the curd rice in The Art & Science of Cooking (via the Indian Nutrient Databank): 80 g of rice with a quarter cup each of curd and milk, tempered with a teaspoon of oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilli, ginger and green chilli, the oil counted as eaten, at IFCT 2017 values with curd from USDA because IFCT has no curd. The rice is taken at 2.98 times its raw weight once cooked and the rest at raw weight, about 372 g, so the plate is 410 calories and the pot 110 per 100 g; mashed curd rice is taken at 1 g per ml, so a 200 ml katori is 220. No analysed curd rice exists in IFCT 2017, NIN or USDA FNDDS, so there is no cross-check. The outside range assumes a katori up to 1.3 times as dense with up to a teaspoon of ghee in the tadka. Every dish on Slate is worked out the same way: how Slate counts calories.
