A calorie tracker without login or ads

What you eat is personal. Slate has no login, no ads and no tracking: there's no account to create, no email or phone number to give, and nothing in the app is sold or shared for marketing.

What no login means

When you install Slate, it creates an anonymous account on your phone. You don't give a name, phone number or email, and Slate doesn't collect your contacts, your location or an advertising ID.

You open the app and start writing. There's no sign-up form, no verification code and no password to remember.

What's stored, and where

  • Your Slate (the lines you write and their numbers) is stored in Mumbai, India, on Supabase servers in AWS's Mumbai region. Each account can read only its own data.
  • No ads, no ad SDKs, no tracking and no analytics at launch.
  • Barcode scanning sends only the barcode number to Open Food Facts. Label scanning happens on your phone.
  • When Slate doesn't recognise a line, the line is sent to Anthropic's AI to read. With Slate Plus, photos and chat messages are too. None of it is used to train AI models, and photos are never stored.
  • Subscriptions are handled by Apple, and RevenueCat holds only your subscription status.

What Slate never asks for

Slate doesn't ask about health conditions or medication. Reminders, if you turn them on, are scheduled on your iPhone itself, with no push service and no marketing messages. And without a login there's nothing for a sales team to call or email; Slate doesn't have one.

Questions worth asking any calorie app

Whichever app you use, these questions tell you most of what you need to know about your data:

  1. Do I need an account, and what does it ask for?
  2. What's collected besides what I log, such as contacts, location or an advertising ID?
  3. Where is my data stored, and who can read it?
  4. Are there ads or ad SDKs in the app?
  5. Is anything I write used to train AI models?
  6. Can I export and delete everything myself, without writing to support?

Export or delete, any time

From Settings you can export your whole Slate as JSON and CSV, and delete all of it. Deletion is immediate on the server, with backups cleared within 30 days. Both are free.

Slate follows India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023. The full details are in the privacy policy.

Why we built it this way

A calorie journal only works if it's quick to open and you trust it with what you write. A login screen, marketing emails and ads all get in the way of that, so Slate has none of them. Two of the four promises we've made publicly are that Slate won't show you ads and won't sell or share your data.

Questions people ask

Can I use a calorie tracker without signing up?

Yes. Slate creates an anonymous account on your phone, so there's no sign-up, email or phone number.

Does Slate show ads?

No. There are no ads, no ad SDKs and no tracking.

Where is my data stored?

In Mumbai, India. Nobody else can see your Slate, and you can export or delete all of it from Settings.

Is my food data used to train AI?

No. Lines Slate doesn't recognise, and with Plus photos and chat messages, are read by Anthropic, but they aren't used to train models and photos are never stored.
