Motichoor ladoo calories
One motichoor ladoo of about 28 g, the size on packed labels, has about 115 calories, and 2 about 235. A large sweet-shop ladoo of about 45 g is about 190. Sugar syrup is about a third of the calories and the frying ghee a third more. Sweet-shop ladoos run about 115 to 250 each, mostly by size.

Motichoor ladoo is tiny boondi, pearls of besan batter fried in ghee, soaked in sugar syrup and pressed into a ball. The pearls are finer than in a boondi ladoo, which is why it holds together and melts. It is the ladoo of weddings, temples and Diwali boxes across north India.
Per gram it is lighter than besan ladoo, because the syrup brings water in with the sugar. Per piece it depends almost entirely on how big the halwai rolls it.
Typical values for a home kitchen, for the portion named next to each number. Other sites often show bigger numbers because they count a bigger serving or a restaurant recipe. Your own katori, roti and oil change the number; Slate adjusts for them.
How many calories are in motichoor ladoo?
| Portion | Cals | Protein | Carbs | Fat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 motichoor ladoo (about 28 g) about 28 g | 115 | 2 g | 15 g | 6 g |
| 2 motichoor ladoos about 56 g | 235 | 4 g | 30 g | 11 g |
| 1 large ladoo (about 45 g) about 45 g | 190 | 3 g | 24 g | 9 g |
| 100 g about 100 g | 420 | 7 g | 54 g | 20 g |
How does home motichoor ladoo compare with outside?
Three packed labels put motichoor ladoo at 410 to 429 calories per 100 g, within 5% of this page's 420, so a sweet shop's recipe changes little. What changes is the size: a packed ladoo is about 28 g, and a halwai or wedding ladoo can be 60 g.
The range below runs from a 28 g ladoo to a 60 g one.
| Version | Cals | Fat |
|---|---|---|
| Home | 115 | 6 g |
| Sweet shop or wedding | 115 to 250 | 6 to 12 g |
What changes the calories in motichoor ladoo?
- Size is nearly everything: a 60 g wedding ladoo has more than twice the calories of a 28 g packed one.
- Sugar syrup is about a third of the calories. Ladoos soaked longer are heavier and sweeter.
- Frying in ghee or in oil makes no difference to the number; the boondi takes up about the same fat either way.
- Boondi ladoo, with bigger pearls, is close per gram. A roasted besan ladoo is richer, about 470 per 100 g, because it holds no syrup water.
- Nuts, magaz seeds and a silver leaf on top add a few calories at most.
How were these numbers worked out?
No standard textbook in the Indian Nutrient Databank has motichoor or boondi ladoo, so Slate uses Sanjeev Kapoor's motichoor laddoo: 2½ cups of besan as a thin batter dropped into hot ghee as boondi, soaked in a syrup of 1⅓ cups of sugar and ¼ cup of milk, and rolled into 25 ladoos, at IFCT 2017 values with sugar from USDA and cups at USDA's weights. The recipe gives no ghee quantity, so the ghee taken up is set so that the finished ladoo is about 20% fat, and about a quarter of the sugar's weight is kept as syrup water; both are assumptions. That gives a batch of about 696 g at 420 calories per 100 g, so one ladoo, a twenty-fifth, is about 28 g and 115 calories. Three labels check it within 3%: Haldiram's at 410 and 428 calories per 100 g and Deep's at 429. The sweet shop range is size only, up to USDA's 60 g ladoo. Every dish on Slate is worked out the same way: how Slate counts calories.
| Ingredient | Raw | Values from |
|---|---|---|
| Besan (ground Bengal gram dal) 2½ cups, for the batter | 230 g | IFCT 2017 B001 |
| Sugar, white 1⅓ cups, for the syrup | 267 g | USDA FDC 169655 |
| Milk, whole, cow ¼ cup, added to the syrup to clear it | 61 g | IFCT 2017 L002 |
| Ghee Taken up in frying the boondi: set so the ladoo is about 20% fat, as packed labels show (an assumption) | 124 g | IFCT 2017 T013 |
| Water 3 cups in the batter, fried off, and 3 cups in the syrup, boiled to one thread; about 67 g is taken to stay in the syrup (an assumption) | 1,420 g | no calories |
